Weidenthal conceived the idea of a series of gardens, each having a central theme concerning the history of a single nationality group in Cleveland, Ohio. The City of Cleveland and the Work Projects Administration did much of the work on the earlier gardens after a 1927 ordinance set aside areas of Rockefeller Park next to the Shakespeare Garden for the development of similar gardens with ethnic themes. Following the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, the museum established a permanent office and exhibit gallery in the Old Arcade in downtown Cleveland. Although the museum closed in 1981, it was able to document the experiences of immigrants through oral histories, photographs, and other collected material. It was located in the riverbank in the Flats, by Riverbend Street from Columbus Road to the Detroit-Superior Bridge on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River.The site was excavated by a group of volunteers led by Dr. Al Lee. One of the volunteers was Sharon Baker. While living in Cleveland, he worked in refrigeration and taught Irish dancing at the West Side Irish American Club on Madison Avenue and West 98th Street. He was one of the main organizers of the first Cleveland Feis (competition) in the late 1950s. He taught several teachers at the Masterson School of Irish Dance, including the owner, Bobby Masterson. Shanahan and his wife Sally, have three children, Dennis, Colleen, and Erin. The family moved to New York in the 1960s. Living in New York, Shanahan concentrated on Irish drama, and performed in many Irish productions in New York. He and his family returned to Dublin, Ireland ca. 1980. The collection consists of images of Kevin Shanahan and native Clevelanders, in addition to out of state dancers participating at a number of Irish Dance competitions in Cleveland, Ohio. Van Oeyen was hired as a Cleveland Press photographer in 1901, after his photographs of the water intake explosion disaster in Lake Erie, and the assassination of President William McKinley, were published in the Press. During his career at the Press, he shot portraiture, politics, disaster, crime, scandal, and sports photographs. His greatest love was baseball, and he became official photographer for the American League in 1908, and for the World Series until 1922. Van Oeyen also helped test new photographic equipment, most notably the General Electric flash bulb in 1938. He assisted other photographers at the beginning of their careers, including Margaret Bourke-White and Herman Seid. Van Oeyen died in 1946.
